How to start a movement

Derk Sivers on how to start a movement in under 3 minutes

A leader needs the guts to standout and be ridiculed.

He needs a follower and must treat him as an equal. Then there is a plural. THEM.

The first follower transforms the loan nut into a leader.

A second follower makes 3, and 3 is a crowd and a crowd is news.

A movement must be public. Then the momentum creates a tipping point leading to the movement! When more people join in it’s less risky for others to join – they won’t stand out, they won’t be ridiculed, they will be part of the in crowd if they join!

Lessons

  1. It’s important to nurture your first few followers as equals
  2. Leadership is overglorified. The shirtless guy was first but the first follower was the one who transformed the loan nut into a leader.

So remember...when you find a loan nut doing something great. Have the courage to follow and show others how to follow.
