From Kudos to Thanks

Some big Rypple news: we’re renaming “Kudos” to “Thanks!”

Don’t worry – Thanks still works the same way! It’s an easy and fun way to recognize great work and give feedback to your team.

I focus on the new user experience here at Rypple, and sending Kudos is a key part of that. We noticed that many new users were confused by the word Kudos – but everyone knows what Thanks are. Thanks was actually one of the first words I learned in English!

Since our goal is to make Rypple as easy and accessible to as many people as possible, we decided to change the name. “Thanks” was an easy choice because most of our users already use that word to express appreciation and recognition for great work. The word “Kudos”, on the other hand, was rarely used.

What you’ll see in the app (later today!)

Thanks UI

At Rypple, we thrive on feedback. Observing our users and listening to their suggestions is a key part of our design process. In this case, our users clearly showed us how they wanted “Kudos” to evolve. We listened and renamed “Kudos” to “Thanks”. Other Thanks improvements are coming soon as well so please stay tuned.

If you have comments or questions, shoot me a note at tihomir@rypple.com or leave a comment on this post.

Thanks :)

I personally feel "Kudos" is the better word to convey the people about praising the achievement for their work. While searching the online dictionary it says "Acclaim or praise for exceptional achievement". Moreover in the usage note from thefreedictionary.com, Kudos conveys like this "Acknowledging the Greek history of the term requires Kudos is due her for her brilliant work on the score".

"thanks" is only used to show just a formal reply for their work or achievement. But, the word "Kudos" definitely convey the meaning "Praise for exceptional achievement". I agree Kudos is new word comparing "Thanks" but at the same you are letting the user to think what is kudos? and what's the special of it. Now a days, It's also different level of marketing to let the user think. Think about Kijiji and what's the market strategy? They might have thought kijiji is the right word to let the user think and get to know the meaning by googling. I got attracted by the word kijiji and I felt something special in it.

Like above, we can sell our ideas about Kudos and why do we stick on kudos instead of thanks. Instead of replying formally by thanks, kudos shows different dimension in case of praising one person.

I support Kudos rather than thanks!
