82% aren’t connected to their boss on a social network
Based on the Adecco What Employees Really Think About Their Bosses Survey, 82% are not connected to their boss via a traditional social network.
We’ve seen that many employees don’t trust their managers, and I’m sure that’s one of the biggest reasons why we try to keep that divide between work (our boss) and our personal lives. According to Adecco:
In fact, nearly one-third (32 percent) of employees who are connected to their boss via a social network site wish they weren’t and almost half (45 percent) of those who are connected, have adjusted their privacy settings to keep certain aspects of their profile blocked from their boss.
We spend so much time with our bosses so isn’t it important for them to know us as people too? Why wouldn’t we be open enough to share social events, photos and statuses? Maybe if we were closer with our bosses more people would be passionate about their work.
After all, any employee scared of connecting with their boss on a social network for fear of their boss seeing something that could damage their carer should probably consider what they’re posting, before they post it. CNN recently published some tips for playing it safe with social media:
1. Think before you post
2. Be picky about who you friend
3. Do it on your own time and computer
4. Watch what you post at home
5. Keep the dialogue positive
6. Figure out privacy settings
7. Learn your employee rights
Definitely good rules to live by though given how much work and personal already blend together today, I think we should add another: try your best to be yourself.
