What’s the secret behind successful organizations?

According to leadership expert John Baldoni, one of the chief ingredients of the most successful organizations is purpose: knowing what they do and why they do it.

John joined Rypple this week for a web seminar in Rypple’s Leadership Series and shared his insights on leading people and organizations with purpose.

John discussed the elements of purposeful leadership, and how leaders can foster innovation and put people first. He also examined how employee engagement and working 1:1 with individuals creates trust and a sense of belonging, which builds positive culture and strengthens teams.

Here are some highlights:

  1. Purposeful organizations value their people. People want to be part of something great and work on something bigger than themselves. Prioritizing people means offering opportunities for employee development, providing public recognition, promoting from within, and rewarding great work. When people see that they are being put first they are happy, enriched, satisfied, and they derive meaning from their work.
  2.  Leading with purpose opens the door to more innovation and creativity. Engaging employees and viewing them as collaborators, provides people with the authority to innovate.
  3. Leading with purpose means making it safe to fail. Allowing employees to fail allows them to be more innovative and, eventually, to prevail. This means challenging people to think outside the box, rewarding employees who take risks, providing clear guidance, and recognizing people who overcome challenges.
