Managing Up: Communicate Progress Weekly
Shortcut # 45
Never assume your boss knows what you need or how you are doing. Keep her informed on a weekly basis by using this adapted format utilized by Intel Corporation. This format alerts your boss to what you have achieved, areas where you need help, and your future short-term priorities.
• Highs (accomplishments, results)
• Lows (derailers, poor results)
• Issues (challenges with which you need assistance)
• Plans (next week’s top priorities)
I’ve always found it important to have a section for long-term personal goals on routine check-ins. Even if they are personal goals, I think it’s important to: a) put it out there for people to see and judge; and b) always to have your long-term vision close by for both you and your boss as a reality check on what’s important.
